Self-Awareness

Goal: Help students understand that each person has unique traits that form their sense of self.

Today’s focus: Build understanding first, then invite low-pressure sharing.

    • Normalize the silence: “That’s okay—this one can take a second to think about.”

    • Give one simple example first

    • Let students think alone or in pairs before sharing

    • First affirm the sharing: “Thanks for sharing that.”

    • Help reframe gently: “That could also mean you have a lot to say and enjoy connecting with people.”

    • Avoid correcting too quickly

    • Simplify the prompt

    • Give a concrete example

    • Use a shorter question or quick turn-and-talk

    • Acknowledge it briefly

    • Bring the class back: “That’s interesting. Let’s connect it back to today’s question.”

    • Keep pacing without shutting the student down

My Teaching Notes

  • Give students time to think before sharing

  • Affirm first, then reframe

  • Don’t rush the opening

  • Keep the tone supportive, not evaluative

  • Leave time for closing reflection

  • I tend to move too quickly during discussion
